About Matheran Hill Station
Located in Karjat Taluka of Raigad district, Matheran sits at 800 meters above sea level and is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station. The name “Matheran” translates to “Forest on the Forehead.” It was discovered in May 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Malet, then Collector of Raigad.
Matheran is just 90 km from Mumbai and 120 km from Pune, making it a perfect weekend getaway. Vehicles are allowed only till Dasturi Naka, after which you can either walk or hire a horse to explore.
The Famous Matheran Toy Train – Matheran Travel Guide

Constructed in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy, this narrow-gauge toy train is one of only five in India and is a major attraction. It runs from Neral to Matheran (21 km), ascending from 50 m to 750 m above sea level, offering incredible valley views. During monsoon, the train operates only between Aman Lodge and Matheran.

Reaching Matheran via Dasturi Naka and Scenic Ghat Section
The last point for vehicles is Dasturi Naka. To reach it, you ascend the winding Matheran Ghat. The journey offers views of the valleys, waterfalls, and the forested Western Ghats.
Kadyavarcha Ganpati – Spiritual Spots in Matheran
A hidden gem, this 60-foot stone-carved idol of Lord Ganesha sits on the edge of a cliff. Established in 2004, it’s accessible via a 2 km walk along the toy train track and offers stunning views and peaceful vibes.
Charlotte Lake and Surrounding Points
Charlotte Lake is the main water source for Matheran and becomes photogenic during monsoon. Overflow creates a waterfall near Celia Point, which is closed in monsoon for safety. Nearby attractions include Lords Point and King George Point, offering views of Pisarnath Waterfall.
Echo Point and Louisa Point
At Echo Point, shout and hear your voice bounce back. Louisa Point offers panoramic views of the mountains and valleys, including Pisarnath Waterfall and the Shivaji Maharaj statue atop a separate peak.

In monsoon, Matheran becomes a mystical rainforest where fog wraps around everything—even at noon. The forest gets so dense that it can feel like night in the middle of the day.
Sunset Point and Heavy Rainfall
Though actual sunsets are rare during monsoon, Sunset Point still offers a tranquil escape. Matheran receives around 850 mm of rain yearly, with a record 440 mm on a single day in 2019. This heavy rainfall can cause landslides, as happened in 2000.
Alexander, Rambaug, and Garbett Points
Alexander Point is close to the market and offers quick access. Rambaug Point can be foggy, but clear skies reveal valley views. Garbett Point requires a 40-minute walk but rewards with views of the lush Garbett Plateau.

Peb Fort Trek – Monsoon Trekking near Matheran
Near Matheran, Peb Fort (Vikatgad) is a popular monsoon trekking destination. Along the toy train track and through the forest, you’ll reach a small temple dedicated to Peb Devi, located atop a dramatic cliff.
Jummapatti Waterfall and Other Matheran Waterfalls
Jummapatti Waterfall is family-friendly and visible during the drive from Neral. However, only private vehicles can stop there. Other waterfalls include Diksal, Dodhani, and Bekre, all worth visiting.

Matheran is known for its red soil, dense forest, and monkey population. Avoid eating in front of them. Local vendors operate food stalls near most viewpoints, offering delicious and affordable snacks.
